It was the day the Big One hit. Everyone knew there were earthquakes in California, and everyone knew they were nothing to worry about – until it happened. In the early morning of April 18, 1906, the city of San Francisco was laid low by a devastating earthquake, the likes of which had never been felt before nor replicated since.

This app compiles selected original newspaper pages, digitized and selected by the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC) at the University of California in Riverside. It will take you back to earlier tremors in the Californian area, most notably one in 1857, and of course the days and weeks after April 18 in 1906. Relive the chaos, shock, and horror of this truly monumental event in California’s history.
